SIGN YOUR LAND AND BUSINESS AGREEMENTS BY YOURSELF
A businessman living abroad was eager to conclude the purchase of a nice piece of land with building in Nigeria.
Because he could not travel home, he asked his cousin to sign the documents on his behalf. The deal was completed and the money was paid.
Months later, trouble started.
The cousin had no valid Power of Attorney authorizing him to sign. What seemed like a harmless shortcut had created serious legal problem.
Whether you are buying land/building/property, entering a business transaction or signing legal documents, your signature carries legal force.
It is your personal approval and acceptance of the document. If you are far away or unavailable, another person should not sign land or business document for you unless properly authorized in a valid Power of Attorney.
Even for Nigerians in the diaspora, family members, friends or agents may be trustworthy, but trust does not create legal authority.
When disputes arise, the law looks at legal documents, not oral explanations.
The losses can be severe. Transactions may be challenged, ownership may be contested, registrations may fail and investments can be at risk.
So get a Property/Real Estate and Business Lawyer before signing (not after problems arise) to ensure that the correct party signs, proper authority exists and you comply with the law.
Protect your investment. Sign right.
