Let me tell you this straightaway. In the course of my legal practice in the last 17 years, I’ve seen a lot of fatal mistakes people make while negotiating in business.
While sitting on negotiation tables, I have seen too many business negotiation mis-steps to tell you this: don’t major on the minor. Don’t. Instead capitalize and focus on your core strengths. Your strong points should be your emphasis. That is not to say that you will play the ostritch when it comes to your weaknesses.
I’m only saying anything to the contrary predisposes you to negotiating from a position of weakness. Trust me, you don’t want that. This is not to discourage you from branching out into new horizons.
Venture into new areas if you wish, but be careful not to overload yourself with too many areas of interest.
I can confidently tell you that this mistake keeps happening. Never ever stops. Showcase your expertise and don’t try to overstep into uncharted course. The operative work here is ‘overstep.’
So step but don’t overstep. Master the art and go with the flow. It is not about trying to impress, it’s about being at home with your abilities.
There are little edges some of us possess that we don’t utilize enough. These little advantages can make a lot of difference in the outcomes of your business negotiation.
