DO NOT SIGN PROPERTY AND BUSINESS DOCUMENT/AGREEMENT AS MR. & MRS.
When it comes to property and business transactions, signing wrongly can affect a good deal.
One big mistake people still make is signing documents as “Mr. & Mrs.” (e.g. Mr. & Mrs. John West) in one column. It may look harmless but legally it is not allowed.
Most people do it because they believe a husband and wife are one. In the eyes of the law they are not.
In law, each person is a separate legal entity. When two people squeeze themselves into one signature column, the document becomes unclear about who exactly signed, who accepted the obligations and who can be held liable.
This confusion can invalidate the agreement or transaction, affect future dealings on it and even lead to court cases.
Imagine trying to sell or transfer the property later. Who signed this document? Was it the husband? The wife? Or both? If one signed for both, the signatures, the document becomes invalid and the entire deal can collapse.
The correct approach is that each person should sign in separate signature columns, with their full individual names clearly written.
This protects ownership, clarifies duties and saves you from preventable legal headaches.
Remember, whether you are in Nigeria or abroad, every property or business Agreement, Contract or document must be drafted by an experienced Property Lawyer to protect your interest.
In law, small mistakes cause big losses. Never sign as “Mr. & Mrs.”
It will not fly.
