GET YOUR PROPERTY/REAL ESTATE LAWYER BY YOURSELF

When you want to buy or transact in land/building in Nigeria, get a Property and Real Estate Lawyer yourself.

Letting your seller, his representative or agent secure a Property/Real Estate Lawyer for you is wrong.

Remember that your Lawyer has a duty to protect your interests and his allegiance/loyalty should be to you as his client.

Allowing them get a Lawyer for you could expose your Lawyer to conflict of interests.

The Lawyer given to you by the seller or his agent may in fact be their own Lawyer.

Even where he is not, it could be difficult to shield him from looking out, even though subconsciously, for the interests of the seller or realtor who could be said to be his benefactor for the purposes of the land or house transaction.

You do not want to end up with a Lawyer for the other side. Do you?

So search for a Lawyer by yourself or your own people. That way, he will be insulated from the control or influence of the seller and his agents.

Remember that the Lawyer ought to be involved in due diligence (investigations).

In practical terms, it is hard to imagine how a Lawyer would independently investigate the claims of his helper.

That would be a very difficult thing for the Lawyer to do. So to get the best from your Lawyer, choose one for yourself.

It is better to err on the side of caution.
