If you think your next of kin will automatically inherit your property when you are no more, you are romancing legal wahala that has scattered many Nigerian families.
It is one of the most common dangerous misconceptions people have and it is costing families their unity, money, property and business.
A next of kin is not an automatic beneficiary of property. It is merely a person to be contacted in case of emergency or when decisions need to be made about you, especially in hospitals, workplaces or official records. That is all.
Inheritance in Nigeria does not follow the next of kin system. It follows your Will or if there is no Will, your applicable law of inheritance, whether it is the Administration of Estates Law, Customary Law or Islamic Law.
So many people have passed on, thinking their chosen next of kin would inherit everything, only for the court or family members to override that wrong assumption.
When someone makes his child, spouse or sibling as next of kin, that family member may still end up with nothing because the law, not emotions, determines who gets what.
If you truly want your preferred person to inherit your money, land, houses and investments, you must prepare a valid Will or make proper estate distribution documents.
This must be done by an experienced Property Lawyer, whether you are in Nigeria or living abroad, to ensure everything is legally binding.
So stop assuming. Plan properly. Protect your loved ones. Be guided.
