DON’T LET “MR. AND MRS.” COST YOU YOUR PROPERTY OR BUSINESS
It sounds so sweet and romantic for “Mr. and Mrs. David Enyindah” proudly buying a piece of land, a house or starting a business together. But in law, that cute title could be a silent time bomb waiting to explode.
When a couple uses “Mr. and Mrs.” as the name on documents, whether for buying land, house or registering a business, they create dangerous confusion about ownership.
Nigerian legal documents need clear meaning and legal identity, not emotion.
“Mr. and Mrs.” is not a legal name. It doesn’t say who truly owns what. Is it the husband? The wife? Both? And in what shares?
This confusion can lead to serious trouble during conflicts, divorce, death or inheritance claims, often leaving the woman powerless because her name was not properly stated.
The correct approach is to always state both full names on any land ownership document, business registration or contract: “Mr. David Enyindah and Mrs. Blessing Enyindah” — not “Mr. and Mrs. David Enyindah.”
That way, the husband and wife are clear co-owners with defined legal rights and protections.
Whether it’s land, building or a business, document wisely. Property and profit are too valuable to lose over a wrong name.
Don’t let romance ruin your property or business dreams. Land and business are too valuable to be lost over a wrong name.
Love deeply but sign with your full name.
